Words of Longchenpa

February 7, 2010 § 1 Comment

This morning I read a passage from a text by Longchenpa, entitled Now That I Come to Die. Reminded me of HH Penor Rinpoche:

Now that the connection with this life has lost its karmic power,
Do not lament about this beggar
Who died happily and unattached,
But constantly pray that he be with you in spirit.

Waiting

We spend our lives waiting. Waiting to be successful. To be free of debt. To be famous. Some day we’ll have the glamorous life we’ve heard about.

We never get “there,” for there’s always something just a bit out of reach. Life is spent waiting for the next moment, the perfect moment, only for death to arrive first.

For a few years I’ve been waiting to be a good monk, disciplined and well educated. Thought I’d wake up some morning and find the transformation had transpired. Still waiting for that to happen.

And yet today, for a few moments, I realized we’re already here, now. We’ve already arrived. Then my monkey mind went back to swing from branch to branch, back to waiting to simply be a good person.

Where Am I?
